Shillong, Jan 16: The State Executive Committee (SEC) of the National People’s Party has decided not to put a candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections even as party is in favour of a common candidate supported by all non Congress parties.
The meeting also resolved that party must work unitedly to ensure the defeat of the Congress in the elections.
Speaking to media persons, NPP National president Purno Sangma however asserted that the party would contest the election from Tura seat while stating that the party has directed all its district units in Garo Hills to seek the opinion of all party workers and public on who should be the party’s candidate to the Tura Lok Sabha seat.
According to Sangma, 2014 Lok Sabha elections will bring a change in New Delhi and automatically there will be change in the north east region also.
However, the party performed quite badly in the last Assembly elections in the state as it managed to win only two seats.
“We could not perform well because of criminalization of politics and money power,” Purno Sangma told reporters.
He also said that the most powerful thing in the world is the will of the people as it was shown in the last Delhi elections where people opted for party and not for candidates.
The NPP also made it clear that the party would contest the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), adding the selection of candidates for the MDC elections will also be carried out after consultations with our MPF alliance, including the UDP.
A committee comprising of NPP state president WR Kharlukhi, former MLA ECB Bamon, Forward Lyngdoh has been formed to negotiate on behalf of the NPP with other non Congress parties.(SP News)
