Shillong, Sept 16: Child Rights and Development has been a subject of discussionand deliberations for many years whereby many laws and acts have been put firmly in place for the. protection of children. Feeling the need for fiuther deliberations on this crucial issue, the Social Welfare Department today organized a one-day workshop on Child Rights and Development at Yojana Bhavan Auditorium, Shillong. The workshop was inaugurated by the Meghalaya Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Debora C. Marak in the presence of Social Welfare officials including Principal Secretary, Mr. P W Ingty, Commissioner & Secretary, Mr. T Dkhar and Director Mr. H M Shangpliang.
Commending the Department’s effort to ensure that child rights are well-protected, Mrs Marak, in her inaugural address, said that from time to time the Department has held round the table discussions to monitor the various projects pertaining to child rights and development and also to study the impact of these projects on children. Stating that centrally sponsored projects like the ICPS, ICDS continue to have a positive effect on the health of children, she expressed hope that all such schemes should be implemented in right earnest by the State Government.
Mrs. Marak called upon the officials of the Department to work hard especially in areas relating to improving literacy among children as this would enable them to break the cycle of poverty.
She also expressed hoped that the suggestions and resolution &om the workshop will inspire andstrengthen the Department’s resolve to work for the best interest of children. Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalsya, Social Welfare Department Mr.P W Ingty said that it is essential to understand the needs of the children and one should work together for the development of a child and to ensure that their rights as enshrined in the Constitution are followed and protected.(SP News)
