Shillong, May 18: An Inter School and College Debate competition organised by Walk with 9 lives at U Soso Tham Auditorium saw heated participation by schools and college students from various educational institutions in the city on Saturday.
Trying to give a strong opinion on the topic “India should abolish the death penalty” participants from various colleges tried to win the juries score sheets with their good speech and pointed out as to whether India should or should not abolish the death penalty.
As it used to be in any debate competition those supporting the motion tried to express with confidence that India should abolish the death penalty and on the other hand those against the motion as well came up with heated counter reaction that India should not abolish death penalty.
However, in the Inter College debate centre around the motion, where the house believes India should abolish the death penalty .
While the inter school debate centre around the motion, where the house believes that higher education should be made free for all.
Altogether there were 27 schools which partake in this completion.15 were schools and 12 were colleges. While for the second day only 6 schools reach the finals while only 2 colleges reached the finals.
The 1st prize was handed over to the Alice Abhilasha Khongshei, the 2nd to Sourav Burgohain, and the 3RD prize was handed over to First Lakupar Iaubor amongst the interschool debate competition. While Pronto Saikia was handed over the 1ST prize, Swapna Mallik was handed the second place and Sourav Burgohain was handed over 3rd prize, for the inter college debate.
The other highlights of the function amongst others were the critique of education system , a panel discussion on cultural pride in your community when it becomes harmful the participants were Patricia Mukhim, David Laitphlang and Avner Pariat.(SP News)
