Shillong, August 26: With the monsoon season lashing hard in the state, half done works in road construction and reparation by the State Public Works Department unveiled at various places in the state.
This was seen along the crucial Mawphlang-Tyrsad-Mawsynram Balat stretch of the road whereby one can find pot holes and craters all along causing the road to be in a pathetic condition.
To the annoyed commuters and passengers who has to go through this stretch everyday, travelling becomes difficult.
Expressing anger over the pathetic road condition, a daily commuter M Basan while talking to SP News said that whatever reparing work that the Department carried out last winter seems just to fool the people.
“If the department would have done it in a proper manner, this road would not have withered by now,” she added.Further, she said that the PWD repair the road just for the sake of doing it.
“The repairing works of the pathetic road condition is just to impress the people, showing that the State Public Works Department (PWD) is doing something to rebuild the sagging image of this road, yet for any common layman the messy repairing works is noticeable,” Basan said.
Blacktopping at certain stretches is visible while the other portions of the 23 Km odd. To the daily commuters and drivers of the commercial vehicles, the entire blacktopping and fillings is a cosmetic exercise.
Besides, she also said that it is for this reason that without solid base and with just simply carpeted by bitumen that the road withered very soon.
Even villagers said that the PWD has been making their life miserable in the past fifteen years.
The villagers said that these similar sorts of “stop gap” repairing works has been going on for many years. Considering the problems faced by them, Basan said that they cannot rely on any representative as everyone turns out to be making false promises.
It may be mentioned here that this road happens to be the main corridor to the newly created South West Khasi Hills district and to the revenue generated coal rich belt.(SP News)
