Shillong, March 23: Irked over failure of the education department to release the sanctioned of salary of primary teachers with effect from December 1, 2012 to February 28, 2013, the primary school teachers of the state under the banner of All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers’ Association will stage a protest on March 26.
In a meeting held recently the teaching community had decided to organise an agitational programme on March 26 from 10am onwards at Student’s Field in Jaiaw, demanding immediate disbursement of salaries, head teachers’ allowances, maternity leave from 120 days to 180 days and retirement benefits.
It may be mentioned that last year, the state government approved enhancement of salary of both ad hoc lower primary and upper primary school teachers which was supposed to be effective from December 1, 2012.
However, the approved salary has not yet been disburse to them till date.
It may be mentioned here that the salary of ad hoc lower primary school teachers was increased to Rs 6,000 from the current Rs 3,000 and for the ad hoc upper primary schools teachers the salary was raised to Rs 8,000 from current Rs 6,000. For head teachers, the pay has been raised from Rs 7000 to Rs 9000.
Besides, it may also be recalled that Education Minister Prof RC Laloo had then informed that the grant for 1225 ad hoc lower primary schools has been raised to Rs 12,000 from Rs 6000 per month for two teachers and for 844 upper primary schools, the grant has been increased to Rs 33,000 from Rs 25,000 per month for three teachers including the head teachers irrespective of their qualifications.He had also mentioned that a total amount of Rs 1,764 lakh will be required to meet the additional expenditure.
