Tura, Feb 10: Meghalaya’s sports & youth affairs minister, Zenith Sangma today urged financial institutions to come forward and help women. He dwelt on the need to empower women for the welfare and development of the society.
He laid emphasis on government’s pro-active approach to include women under financial inclusion programme.
Speaking at the community banking service programme of the State Bank of India (SBI) at Tura, Sangma pitched for financial assistance to women self help groups (SHGs). He said that banks have to be accommodative in understanding the needs of the rural people.
He also suggested banks not to approach economically poor with loan facilities.”It becomes a burden on the family as they have to adjust and compromise to repay the loan”, said Sangma.
The minister also advised the people not to spend more than their income. “People avail loan to start ventures, however, they fail as they lack experience. It is my advice that without being calculative not to go for loan”, said Sangma.
He flagged off an ambulance along with SBI ‘s AGM for Garo hills, Nixon Joseph.
The ambulance was donated to Bakdil, an NGO working for improvement of rural health sector in Garo hills.
Director of Bakdil, Fr. Sunny said, “Garo hills needs an efficient ambulance service, which is affordable. SBI’s initiative will add up to their existing service”. He also focussed on the deplorable rural health scenario, which has led to untold miseries.
He took the opportunity to urge the government to address the critical issues of health care system in Meghalaya.
“Government have to reach out to far flung villages, where health care facilities are not much. It is my earnest appeal that government makes a concerted effort to provide health services in rural and inaccessible areas”. The ambulance was donated to Bakdil under community banking service of the SBI.(SP News)
