Shillong, March 18: Members of the local NGO’s of the state reiterated that the MUA II should implement a strong and effective Lokayukta Bill in the state.
Coming up with a strong blow towards the Congress government in the state for not taking any attempt to relook at the Lokayukta Bill and have a thorough disucssion and debate at the onging assembly session even after it was send back by the governor to the government the members of the local NGO’s pointed out that it is pointless for Congress to mention about the Lokayukta in the election manifestoes during their election campaign in order to remove corruption.
Addressing a press cnference here on Monday, convener of the Maitshaphrang Movement Michel Syiem said, “We have seen in the manifesto of all the political parties during election they had mention bout the lokayukta on how they want a strong and effective lokayukta to deal with corruption in order to bring about transperancy accountability.”
“We expect that since the Lokayukta is included in the respective manifestoes they should bring about a really effective lokayukta law in the state,” he added.
Harping on the lacunas of the previous Lokayukta Act, Syiem said, “We want the government to send it back to the house so that there will be a thorough discussion and a debate and the lokayukta bill will be strong effective and an independent body.”
Meanwhile, RTI activist Angela Rangad while pointing out that even UPA gvernment in the centre is pushing all states to have a strong Lokayukta however the Congress government in Meghalaya seems not at all interested.
“In the centre congress president Sonia Gandhi, and the UPA government are pushing for a lokpal bill in which there is a clause that says that state governmnet have to enact a lokayukta and there is a certain module to the lokayukta. Which means the lokpal now is in the final stage of being passed so atleast this lokayukta in the state should atleast reflect the intension and the spirit of the lokpal act which the congress in the centre is pushing.”
“I do not know why? The congress governmnet here has not even put in 10 percent of what is there in the lokpal bill,” she added.
The NGO’s comprises of the Maitshaphrang Movement, FKJGP, the KSU, besides others.(SP News)
