Shillong, August 24: Meghalaya Boxing Association in collaboration with Ri-Bhoi District Boxing Association will organized the 2nd State Sub-Junior (U-16yrs) Boxing Championship at Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi on the 4th of September, 2013.
In a press conference held today at the Shillong Press Club, Larry Kharpran the secretary of Meghalaya Boxing Association (MBA) said that only affiliated units or associate with the MBA will be allowed to participate in the Championship.
“All the expected team or boxers are from East Khasi Hills Boxing Association, West Khasi Hill Boxing Association, Ri-bhoi District Boxing Association, West Jaintia District Boxing Association, Lamlynti Boxing Club, Upper Shillong Boxing Club, Mawngap Boxing club, New Era Boxing club and others,” Kharpran said.
John Kharshiing, the president of MBA said, “We are organizing this boxing championship to encourage and promote boxing sports like other games.”
“To hold such kind of boxing championships it is very expensive. We are facing a lot of financial problems but if we see and think of the financial problems how will be encourage our youths to show their talents?” said John Kharshiing.
Kharshiing further said, “Nevertheless we are moving ahead with the help of our well-wishers and hope that our youths make use of this opportunity given to them.”
“Before we had only one boxing ring but thanks to our government for sanctioning six boxing rings where our boxers will practice and bring laurels to our state because if Manipur can have boxer like Mary kom then Meghalaya can also give birth to many talented boxers,” Kharshiing said.
For the boxing championship, the weight classification are: Sub-Junior Categories (both boys & girls)28kg-30kg (age permitted 10 to 11 yrs) 28.01kgs Not exceeding 30kgs and 33kg,36kg,38kg,42kg,44kg (age permitted 12 to 14yrs).(SP News)
