TURA, Oct 18: Over 2000 class XII students from West Garo Hills district were today given a tablet computer each under the Digital Learning Aid for Students Scheme. The tablets were distributed by Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, free of cost, at an impressive gathering here, at Chandmary Playground.
These tablet PCs are pre-loaded with class XII study materials of MBOSE and CBSE and also sample question papers for engineering and medical entrance examinations, and classroom teaching format video and audio books. The PCs are Wi-Fi enabled so that the students can have unlimited access to study materials across the globe, it was informed.
Handing out the tablets to the students, Dr. Sangma expressed his joy in giving something to the “deserving” ones that is, the students and said that these PCs are designed to empower the students digitally thereby ensuring a secure future for them. “In this age of globalization, we are not insulated from what is happening around the world” and therefore we need to prepare our students to keep up pace with the rest of the world, he said, adding that these PCs are meant to create an enabling environment in the schools and colleges.
Meghalaya is one of the very states which have come up with such a scheme of providing digital learning aids to the students. Dr. Sangma also informed that the government has taken further step to make the school classrooms Wi-Fi enabled.
Taking a tough stand against those “self-styled” leaders who call frequent bandhs and agitations in the name of students’ organizations, the Chief Minister said that giving of PCs will not help unless we create conducive environment to help the students grow. Saying that the demand for ILP was irrelevant as there are laws to protect the indigenous people, he added that we only need to strengthen those existing laws and the traditional institutions.
“The government has to fulfill its agenda and promises to the people and it cannot do that when it is disturbed, so it should be given an enabling environment to work”, he said.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Zenith Sangma who also addressed the massive gathering, said that maximum investment was being made on the education sector with a view to take it to a much higher level and reminded the students that their prime duty is to study and build up their lives so that in later years the would be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Parliamentary Secretary, Noverfield R. Marak and Deputy Commissioner West Garo Hills Pravin Bakshi also spoke on the occasion, while colorful dances and songs calling for national integration and peace were also presented by different schools during the distribution programme.(SP News)
