Tura, Feb 25: Meghalaya police today arrested a CRPF personnel for
allegedly molesting three women in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills. The
jawan identified as A Basumatary was arrested after an FIR filed by
the family members yesterday.
Basumatary was produced in district court and has been sent for 14
days judicial custody.
According to the FIR, the three women were molested on February 22
last. It also stated that the CPRF jawan molested one of the women on
gun-point.
One of the victim, who is a mother of two daughters said, “I was
returning from the bazaar in the evening. It was dark, so I used my
mobile light to find my way. Suddenly, I heard the CRPF jawan shouting
to put off the light or else he will shoot. After I put off the light,
he approached and made advances”.
The second victim said, “When I heard Sabita (named changed)
screaming, I came out to find out what has gone wrong. However, the
CRPF jawan put his gun on my head and asked me to keep quite”.
The third victim narrated her ordeal, “Of the three CRPF personnel, I
could recognize one of them. It was dark and we heard a lot of
shouting. When I tried to intervene, he molested me and my uncle, who
had raised his hands up”.
She also said that the jawan molested her thrice and made advances.
An eyewitness to the incident said, “We were having our dinner, when
this incident happened. Seeing my husband raising his hands, I came
out. I tried to enquire, what was going wrong. They replied in abusive
languages and fled from the scene”.
All the three women, where in the age group of 18-21 years.
An activist of federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People, Mathew R
Marak said, “The guilty should be punished at all cost. We will oppose
his bail plea. How can a CRPF personnel point guns at innocent
civilian and that too for molestation”.(SP News)
