The crucial issues of influx and illegal immigration remained a priority of the government: RC Laloo

TURA, 15 August: Along with the rest of the nation Tura celebrated the 67th Independence Day of the country from the yoke of British colonial rule at a grand function organised at Tura M P Stadium.  Deputy Chief Minister Professor R C Laloo unfurled the Tri Color and took the Rashtriya Salute amidst a 40 strong marching contingent comprising of state police, paramilitary and school students. .

Addressing the gathering Prof Laloo recalled with gratitude the immense contribution of the great freedom fighters that the state contributed  during the freedom struggle. “Despite its relative size in the Indian Federation, our state has had its fair share of contribution in the freedom struggle and this is an apt occasion to reverently remember with pride the unsung heroes of our state” He said. Stating that great nations can be built only with the contribution and hard work of all its citizens, Prof Laloo urge the people to harbor firm faith in democracy and stick to democratic values.

The Deputy Chief Minister informed that the crucial issues of influx and illegal immigration and its mitigation through various measures remained a priority of the government.  Commending the election department Prof Laloo stated that for the first time in the history of the state 100% photo and EPIC coverage was achieved. The state has projected an outlay of Rs27,027 crores for the twelfth plan with a targeted corresponding growth rate of 11% through appropriate interventions to ensure faster economic growth he informed.

Speaking on the state’s flagship programme the IBDLP Prof Laloo stated that management of natural resources particularly water and biotic resources of the state were of crucial importance in ensuring inclusive growth and sustainable development.  Later elaborating on the government’s various initiatives and interventions Prof Laloo said “We must show to the world that we have the wisdom to grasp emerging opportunities and the capability to convert economic potential to new wealth and employment opportunities to foster better living standards for all sections of the society.

During the day appreciation awards were given by the Deputy Chief Minister to Rev Sr Guadulupe Velasco, Lions Club, Tura and Rotary Club, Tura for their selfless endeavors in to uplift the weaker sections of the society. The award was also given to outstanding government employees. The winners of the march past were also awarded certificates and trophies.

In the afternoon sports for children including an exhibition football match between DC Eleven and the District Football Association were held.

The highlights during the days celebration were performances by musical groups comprising of the state’s finest and most popular representatives, Afflatus from Shillong and Restless Desire from Tura while the famed dance troupe Knack Movement enthralled the audience with their skill. Tom & Jerry characters and the like interacted with children throughout the celebration.

Meanwhile Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma unfurled the Tri Color at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills while Health and Family Welfare Minister A L Hek arrived as the Chief Guest during the Independence Day celebrations at Dadenggre.(SP News)
