Shillong, Oct 9: Meghalaya yet got to witness some people practicing circumcision without the consent of the children and their parents which is considered illegal.
Minor children from Meherba Orphanage, Laban were brought to NEIGHRIMS Hospital for the circumcision on October 6th last but what was surprising was that their names were not registered either in the MRD Register (Medical Records Department) or in the In Patient Register (IPR).
According to the source, the children were dressed in white and brought to the casualty ward but when the nurses attending the casualty ward asked for their names to be registered the doctor in charge of casualty, Dr Yunus an anesthetist said that they were his patients.
The circumcision was done by Doctor Wassim, an Urologist, who asked for his OT gown and performed the surgery which should have been done by a general surgeon.
Usually Before circumcision, the doctor who will perform the procedure will review the informed consent to discuss the reasons for circumcision, the benefits, risks, and alternatives, and ensures that the parents understand what will happen during the procedure. But here the doctors were illegally performing such operations on minor children who did not know what was happening. When the children were brought out into the observation room the nurses saw these children crying. They were in pain but were kept there for only an hour.
Sources also said that patients at NEIGHRIMS are not treated without the OPD card which is available in the counter or the casualty ward. In the card the seal of the respected departments is given.
The question here arises that how can these doctors flaunt the rules and regulations and performs surgery on these minor children without the consent of their parents, and without recording the children’s names?
Learning about the news, the CSWO expressed its shock as to who has given the consent for the circumcision commenting, “What if the wound becomes septic.”
Meanwhile the CSWO demanded that the administration should book these doctors for gross negligence and for exploiting the vulnerability of these children who must have come from poor rural families.
The CSWO also demanded that the children be immediately removed from Meherba Orphanage home so that the investigation shall not be influenced by any one.(SP News)
