The HRC should act as “bridge” between civil societies and Government:: MPHRC

Shillong, August 14: The Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) Central Executive Committee held today has strongly endorsed its support to the MUA-II cabinet decision under the Leadership of the Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma to constitute the Full fledged State Human Rights Commission.

“Setting up of the State Human Rights Commission has been a long pending demand of the MPHRC since its inception in 1996. However, it was the Former Chief Minister Salseng Marak who offered his suggestion to all the Chief Minister in the North East India on the needs of having a Common Human Rights Commission which was later abandoned due to the setting up of a separate State Human Rights Commission in Assam and Manipur” said MPHRC

“The decision of the government is a welcome step and the creation of a State Human Rights Commission will give a new impetus to the struggle for effective recognition, promotion and protection of human rights in the state. The newly formed Commission is expected to conform to the Paris Principles, a set of International standards for framing up the work of the Human Rights Institution” said Dino D.G. Dympep, Chairperson MPHRC.

The establishment of the State Human Rights Commission will be a boon in addressing and containing the ever rising gross human rights abuses across the state. The Human Rights Redressal Mechanism especially will help the general public at large in their fight for justice and reparation in a much little time and thus saving lot money and energy in filing cases to the NHRC and other Statutory Bodies” said MPHRC

“While unanimously decided to offer all its support, advice and other recommendations,   we will ensure that the role played by such an important institution will not only help the societies in remedying human rights violations but most importantly it should act as “bridge” between civil societies and Government” said MPHRC.(SP News)
