Shillong, December 11: The Khasi language has been recognized as one of the world language by the United Nations through the translation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) which was officially released by Charles Pyngrope Speaker of the Meghalaya legislative Assembly marking the 64 anniversary of the International Human Rights day as declared by the United Nations.
“With this Khasi translated text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Khasi as one of the indigenous language is now among the 402 languages in the world that also share the“Guinness Book of World Record” which was conferred to the UN High Commissioner office in Geneva Switzerland and it can also be access from the UN websites www.un.org” said Dino D. G. Dympep Secretary General MPHRC.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 General Assembly resolution 217 A (III) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
This initiatives and steps also come at the time when Khasi as an associate language of Meghalaya is yet to get full recognition in the Indian Constitution. Now with existence of the translation to the worldwide accepted and recognized document, Khasi language should be accorded a full status of Constitutional recognition in 8thscheduled of the constitution of India which has been pending since 2003 said MPHRC.
While using the translated Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a guide, government must take the responsible for creating laws to protect human rights in the state. Khasi communities can then use in their own judicial and legal systems to prosecute individuals or groups that have violated human rights added MPHRC.(SP News)
