Shillong, Sept 26: The Meghalaya Deaf Association (MDA) in its earnest desire to encourage and take developmental measures for the benefit of persons with speech and hearing impairment has today come forward demanding the state government to also give an ear to their problems in terms of providing education and scholarships.
In a press conference held at the Shillong Press Club on Wednesday, President (MDA) Ferdinand Lyngdoh informed that there are over 8000 deaf people in the state of Meghalaya.
“The major challenges faced by the persons with speech and hearing impairment are discrimination; they do not get the opportunity to develop their skills, vocational, training and talent, opportunity to study among others,” said Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh further said, We want the government to build boarding (hostels) for children with speech and hearing impairment, so that children can get opportunity to study.”
Meanwhile Lyngdoh said that the government should see the capabilities of these persons and not their experience when it comes to conditions for the applying any post of the government jobs including all government schemes.
Lyngdoh has revealed that only 2 per cent of with speech and hearing impairment people are taught in the state.
MDA is an association formed in June 2010 with the aim to create awareness among the members and to the public at large to uplift and empower themselves to lead a better life.(SP News)
