The pine city of Shillong amidst bursting crackers celebrate Diwali

Shillong, Nov 03 : Amidst  bursting of crackers, fireworks and chains of dazzling lights adorning the Pine city Shillong, people residing in the state celebrated Kali Puja on Saturday and Diwali on Sunday.

Interestingly on the occasion of Diwali, the entire India worships goddess Lakshmi- the Hindu goddess of wealth while the Bengalis, Assamese and Oriyas and few other communities  adore Goddess Kali.

Kali puja, the festival of lights is celebrated with immense fun and mirth.

The Kali Puja was celebrated on Saturday Midnight at various temples in the city. Kali Pooja is celebrated on the Amavasya or the no moon night in the Hindu month of Kartik (October/November). This date of Kali Pooja coincides with Diwali, the Festivals of Lights.   Dressed in their best attire large number of people visited various Puja pandals in Shillong on the occasion of Kali Puja befitting the cold wave.

Month long agitation could not dampen the spirit of the celebration in Shillong. Kali Puja celebration in Shillong witnesses the usual fervor, pomp and gaiety.

The preceding days violence in the heart of the city failed to dampen the puja spirit as decent number of devotees were seen visiting the different Puja pandals in the city.

The busting of crackers and the melodious sound of drum beats made the occasion even more energetic.

Houses are decorated and elaborate Rangoli pattern are drawn in front of houses and courtyard. Elaborate Kali Puja is carried out during the evening. Through Puja people seek happiness, prosperity and protection against hardships.

The innovative lighting arrangements and exquisite craftsmanship of artisans made it a truly unforgettable puja for all.(SP News)
