Shillong, Aug 22: The Police of West Jaintia Hills arrested the President of the Meghalaya People United Front (MPUF) Dapoiwanmi Laloo on Wednesday evening fromn his residence for detaining ninety-three non-tribal labourers and took them to the MPUF office.
It may be mentioned here that on August 17 mornning, the members of the MPUF led by its president Dapoiwanmi Laloo stopped and wrongfully detained ninety three non- tribal labourers. However, the police while reacting on news reports immediately reacted and arrested Laloo.
As per the FIR lodged by inspector, Jowai GU Wahlang it was stated that Laloo along with members of MPUF stopped vehicles coming from Karbi Anglong District, Assam at 8th Mile (WJH) and wrongfully restrained ninety-three non-tribal labourers and taken them to MPUF office at Jowai (WJH) where they were released.
While expressing disappoinment over the arrest of its president the members of the MPUF in a press release issued here on Thursday stated that Laloo was arrested simply for apprehended illegal migrants to enquire about their labour licenses.
Meanwhile, the MPUF questioned as to whether the NGOs has any right to check influx while demanding the state government to implement ILP failing of which the various local NGOs will be compelled to react in various ways. (SP News)
