Shillong, Feb 23: The 36 hour bandh called by the militant outfit hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to boycott the state legislative assembly election seems not effective in any way as people defied it and came out of their houses to exercise their right to vote even as the percentage of voters turned up for voting was good in the seven districts of Khasi and Jaintia hills even though the bandh was effective in these districts.
The poll boycott by the HNLC had little bearing on the polling day as voters came out in large numbers to cast their votes to elect their new legislators.
Though Shillong took adeserted look as most shops were closed in some of the busy market places in the town while very less vehicle were plying on road yet the city streets has become a make shift cricket pitch for city lads as they were enjoying playing their match.
Traffic in and around Shillong city was thin as most of the public transports were off the road. But, private transport were seen plying in the streets.
It may be reminded here that earlier, the district adminstration in east Khasi Hills has made arrangement for public transport in all major routes of the city as well as in other parts of the district to ease the public and avail the facility to go to the polling stations and exercise their right to vote without fear.
