The Queen of Battle’, celebrated 67th Infantry Day at Shillong Garrison

Shillong, Oct 28: Infantry, ‘The Queen of Battle’, celebrated 67th Infantry Day at Shillong Garrison on 27 October 2013. This is a historic day for the nation, as on this day, 66 years ago in 1947 the first elements of the Indian Army landed at Srinagar airfield and resolutely defended Kashmir from falling into Pakistani hands. To commemorate this maiden gallant action of the infantry, 27th October is celebrated as the Infantry Day

The Indian Infantry is one of the most battle hardened and combat rich forces in the world, Replete with the glorious history of warfare over a couple of centuries, the Infantry proudly continues to perform the primary and vital role in managing the security environment of the country. Indeed, the Army stood the nation in good stead through a difficult phase of its history, largely due to the selfless devotion to duty of India’s gallant Infantrymen for whom sacrifice is a way of life.

The martyrs were remembered by laying wreaths at the Assam Regimental Centre War Memorial, Happy Valley Shillong, in a solemn ceremony. Among those present were Major General Pankaj Sachdeva, Brigadier MM Gupta, Brigadier S K Bhanot, Brigadier Balwinder Singh, and other Infantry officers of Shillong.(SP News)
