The Science stream of Synod College Shillong reached its twenty five years

Shillong Nov 24: The Science stream of Synod College Shillong reached its twenty five years this year. Celebrating the Silver Jubilee year of the stream, the College organised a function at Dinam Hall, Jaiaw on Saturday.

At the initial stage when the Stream was first introduced in the College in the year 1987 there were only about 20-25 students.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest Commissioner and Secretary of Co-operation department of Meghalaya, B. Dhar said that Science and Technology have advance year by year and even the literacy rate also is increasing.

He said the, “in the previous years, the literacy rate of the state is only 29.5 percent but now it has increase to 77 percent with the introduction of Science and Technology”.

He said, “There is urgent need to address such situations in order not to let down the human values”.

Meanwhile, Principal of the College Dr. D. Wanswett while recalling the history of the college, said that it was in 1962 that the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian (KJP) Synod in its general meeting have decided to set up an institution with an aim to impart education to the people of the area especially from rural areas and was entrusted to the Christian Education Department.

But with the passing year, the college has gone from strenght to strength he said.

He also informed that in 1969, the governing body of the college introduced a degree course in Arts Stream and in 1972, the college was selected as one of the deficit college of the state.(SP News)
