Shillong, April 25: The state government has identified 400 schools in the state under the Non-Structural Litigation Measures in order to ensure students safety in times of natural calamity.
This was informed by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Executive Officer, HB Marak on the sidelines of the state level workshop under NSSP held here on Thursday.
Marak said since Meghalaya falls under the seismic zone 5 therefore it is very important to ensure for the safety of the students.
“Being in seismic zone 5 susceptible to natural calamity especially earth quake,” Marak said adding that The non-structural litigation measures will be taken up for about 400 schools in the state.
Deliberating further on the Non-Structural Litigation Measures Marak said, ,“The non-structural litigation measures will be taken up with 400 schools – 200 in Ri Bhoi and 200 in Garo hills.” He also said that under the non-structural measures, anything that might lead into hampering the students’ safety will be taken care and look into.
Besides, Marak said, “The team will also conduct inspections to these schools to ensure that there is proper entrances and exits in the schools and based on the findings, the department will issue instructions to these school authorities accordingly.”
Informing that the non-structural measures is an inexpensive programme, he said, “Awareness programmes would be held to educate the masses and put down policies which needs to be followed when such calamity occur.”
Meanwhile, talking about the engineers sent by the government to undergo training on both Structural and Non-Structural Measures outside the state, he said,“The training will enable them (engineers) to conduct what is called the ‘rapid-visual-survey’ to know what is required as well as suggesting what is ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’.”
The non-structural measures would be taken up in two districts, the structural measures would however be taken in two schools of the districts.(SP News)
