Shillong, May 22: Showing strong resentment against the increasing crime against women and children in the state, the FKJGP Williamnagar Zone demanded the government to expedite steps to address the matter.
Concerned over the situation, the FKJGP submitted a memorandum to the State Home Minister Roshan Warjri seeking her intervention to address the grievances of the state and East Garo Hills District in particular following repeated cases of rape in the district during the past few months.
FKJGP Williamnagar Zone president Sengseng N Marak said, “The State Goverment should treat the rape victim and rape cases very seriously and provide assistance/package to the victim(s) whenever the situation or condition of the victim requires such assistance,”
He also stressed on the need to formulate stringent policies to ensure the safety and security of women and children and initiated strong actions against the culprits adding that the Juvenile involved should be punished.
Further, he also urged upon the government to give stringent action against the perpetrators of the crime even as he said the culprits should not released on bail until they complete the mandatory period and investigation of rape/gang rape cases should be expedited so as not to allow the culprits to go scot free.
He also said that rehabilitation centres for the victims be provided by the State Government.
The FKJGP also highlighted the need to install a Police booth in Williamnagar Civil Hospital and in other Civil Hospitals of the State while adding that more women police personnel should be recruited and more women cells be installed in appropriate centers.
Marak also pointed out that the State of Art Medical Forensic Laboratory should be upgraded with enhance facilities adding that justice should not be delayed and the cases should be transferred to the fast tract courts.
They also reiterated on the demand for immediate setting up of the fast tract court in East Garo Hills District.
“The doctors and police should be sensitized in the handling the rape cases so that evidences are not lost and the appropriate and immediate care is given to the traumatized victim,” the FKJGP leader said adding that necessary steps should be taken to provide security to the women of the State.
