There is need to coordinate between Medical practitioners and the traditional healers

Shillong, Sept 16: There is need for a mechanism to be set in place for closer interaction between formal Medical practitioners and the traditional village healers, bone setters and birth attendants who compliment health care in the rural areas.

As part of the ongoing training on Malaria Control initiated by Caritas India, Futures Group International India Pvt. Ltd, Society for Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge and Practices (SPIKAP), and officials incharge of Malaria Control, of the Department of Health, Govt of Meghalaya, more than 50 traditional private health care service providers comprising of traditional village healers, bone setters, and birth attendants, were imparted training on the dreaded decease Malaria control at Mawjrong, under Laitkroh C&RD Block.

The program was held on 16 tarik September 2013, in the Laitkroh C&RD Block Hall, at Mawjrong. The healers were provided valuable information and awareness which was provided by Ms M Suhkhlain, M&E/MIS Officer, Caritas India, Futures Group International India Pvt. Ltd, Society for Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge and Practices (SPIKAP), and detail presentation provided by Dr R Kyndiah, M&HO, and Mrs T Mawniuh, Lab Technician, from Malaria Control, Dept of Health, Sorkar Meghalaya.

 

The members of SPIKAP expressed their gratitude to the officials that such a program has been conducted for more than 50 healers comprising of healers , birth attendants and bone setters,  who had come from more than 13 villagers from far flung Khadar Shnong areas comprising of Village Khongthong, Warwar, Khrang, Tyniar, Mawthawtieng, Pdei Puhbsien, Diengsong, Thangtim, Mawtongreng, Nongsteng, Nongbah Mawshuit, Nongtraw, and from village Wah Sohra.most of whom are from the Govt PHC or CHC.

During the training program, while addressing the traditional indigenous healers, Bah John F Kharshiing, Co-Chairman, Meghalaya State Planning Board, & Chairman, SPIKAP, stated that there is need to set in place a mechanism for closer interaction between formal Medical practitioners and the traditional village healers, bone setters and birth attendants who compliment health care in the rural areas.  He stated that such awareness and programs should be conducted regularly as the indigenous healers with proper falicitation can contribute immensely towards the upliftment of health care in the rural areas.
