Shillong, Nov 13: In recent time Meghalaya has witness a numerous challenging situation with respect to Law and order in the state, dealing with such problem, Meghalaya cabinet has decided to raise a raise special multi task force which will help to deal with all law and order situation particularly in Garo hills, Talking to newsperson after cabinet meet on Wednesday, Chief Minister Dr. Mukul sangma said “we had quick review of the Law and order situation, the member of the cabinet dwelt on various aspects of the situation prevailing in the state, particularly in relation to various militancy and insurgency in the state.”
Mukul Sangma after the cabinet meeting said that the government has directed the police department to work out a proposal to raise the “Special Multi-Task Force” which will be as a strong as a battalion to counter problems relating to militancy in the state.
The Chief Minister said “There is an urgent need to strengthen the police organisation, we are made to face certain situation where the forces who are task to focus on counter insurgency operations are often required to be withdrawn because most of the time beside our police forces we are relaying on the forces drawn from the central Paramilitary forces.”
The task of making the proposal has been given to Chief Secretary WMS Pariat. Dr Sangma informed that the proposal will be put in a “fast-track” mode to see that necessary sanctions are given immediately.” He felt the state has not invested adequately to have the kind of security response needed which is capable of meeting the demand of handling crises situations.
Sangma said that it has become necessary for the state government to re-strategize its support and investment required to strengthen the police organization and informed that the government revisited and analysed the security scenario and accordingly decided that time has come for the state government to strengthen the internal security apparatus and appropriately strategize its investment and action plan.
The decision came following the insufficient support received by the state government from centre when tackling the problem of insurgency that is taking a toll on the different parts of the Garo hills region of the state.
Dr, Sangma said, “ We usually put our request to Government of India Ministry of home affairs, when they provide us often it is not as sufficient as it is required in the state. At the same time under various circumstances when Government of India also come across several unforeseen situation in the country they are also compelled to withdraw the forces. “
While asserting that militants have an easy access to sophisticated arms since they come from across the border, Dr Mukul Sangma sought for the cooperation of Central as well as State Government to jointly identify the weaknesses which is helping insurgents.
State Government and Central Government needs to work together and it is not possible for us also to depend on para military forces all the time,” Sangma said while adding that both Central Government as well as State Government should re-strategize the investment for the internal security and strengthen the internal security apparatus.(SP News)
