Shillong, Sept 23, 2013: Bowing down to pressure from a huge group of peaceful protestors, the Government of Tripura on Monday has unc
onditionally accepted the demand to not change the name of Ujjayanta Palace to ‘Tripura State Museum’ instead it will be named as “Tripura State Museum, Ujjayanta Palace”.
Led by Pradyot Bikram Kishore Debbarma, about 15,000 youth gathered at Astabol in a candle light rally on Monday evening demanding the government to withdraw its plan to rename Ujjayanta Palace which was to be inaugurated on September 25, 2013 by the Vice President of India, Md. Hamid Ansari.
The rally can be seen as a success in thwarting the government’s attempt to disgrace the royal heritage of Tripura whose people until date revere the royal family.
Furthermore, according to Tripura’s king Pradyot Debbarma, the Tripura government has decided to install the statue of Maharaj Radha Kishore Manikya, during whose reign the palace was built within the premises of the museum.
“The statue is under preparation and will be installed as soon as it is ready,” Pradyot Debbarma the present king of Tripura told this scribe.
The Maharaj added, “We have not only achieved our goal but more than that is the fact that the statue of former king of Tripura will be erected in the campus of the museum.”
A youth from Tripura also said that this is a great achievement which the people of Tripura have not seen in quite a long while.
“It is such a proud moment for us that we are able to witness this historic event where the first ever statue of our late king Maharaj Radha Kishore Manikya will be installed in the campus of Ujjayanta Palace,” said the youth.
Organized by the Twipra Students Joint federation (TSF) and Joint Action Committee constituted by a number of NGOs including the Indigenous Youth Federation of Tripura (IYFT), Royal Tripura Foundation (RTF) and others, the candle light rally was the biggest rally that Agartala had till date in protest against the alleged name-change of Ujjayanta Palace.(SP news)
