Tura, Feb 21: Meghalaya’s chief minister, Mukul Sangma today underscored the need to address the root cause of militancy in Garo hills. He said that unemployed youths are being lured to insurgency for want of easy money.
The chief minister stated that his government is committed to create job avenues for youths in the state. He was addressing at the launch of skill development programme under chief minister’s employment generation scheme at Tura.
Stating that government jobs have become saturated, he said,”Government is making an attempt to provide opportunities to rural and urban youths in different sectors, so that they can avail better options for their livelihood”. He added, “Issue of employability is being accorded a priority by his government”.
As part of the initiative, 200 youths from West and South West Garo Hills are being recruited for training as security guards. Meghalaya government has inked a memorandum of understanding with peregrine guarding for training and placement of the youths within and outside the state.
On government’s initiative to upscale investment in education, he said, “Two medical colleges under public private partnership are being set up in Shillong and Tura”. “Meghalaya has a legacy for imparting quality education. It is an important area, wherein, we can brand the state as a destination for education and health. This is our strength”, said Sangma.
On introduction of information technology education in all government schools, he announced that under financial aid from ministry of science and technology, Wi-Fi connectivity will be provided to all schools.
Stressing on the need to address resource constraints in government schools, he mooted for technology integration for overcoming the challenges.
He hoped that quality education in rural areas will minimize migration of people to urban areas. The chief minister also launched — “Mesh Net”, an initiative which will connect all health institutions including public health centre, community health centre with video conferencing facilities.
The technology will help health institutions to undertake telemedicine facilities and check-up within and outside the state. He opined that the concept will be replicated in all schools as well. He said, “It will bring the health care institutions under surveillance and will ensure efficient monitoring of facilities”.(SP News)
