Shillong Dec 1: The Department of Social Work, MLCU has taken the initiative to adopt Mawpun Kshaid, a village which is 25 km from the capital for three years. The objective of this initiative is to bring about development in the areas of health, education, sanitation, drinking water and to be a liaison with other organizations.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest Fabian Lyngdoh, MDC and Chairman of the KHADC stressed on the need for various organizations to converge for development. Besides, he also stated that there is a great role for the University to bring about change in the village.
Besides, President ICARE Toki Blah while speaking at the occasion stated that health and education are important factors for the development of the people. However, the need is to capacitate the people to be able to have a Vision of their own.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ngachan Francis, Director, ICAR was present as a special guest. In his speech, he said that food security and nutrition security for people especially marginal, small, poor and landless farmers is of utmost concern.
Marketing of goods has always been a problem, which needs to be dealt. There are many agricultural problems also that people face, but these cannot be dealt totally from an agricultural point of view but certain social practices need to change such as land tenure system that poses as a hindrance to adoption of scientific agricultural practices, Dr Ngachand said.
Besides he also state that there is a scope for capacity building for youths and other training programmes in ICAR, which would benefit the people of the village.(SP News)
