We need to improve relationship with Bangladesh: Naresh Chandra

 

Shillong Nov 20: The National Security Advisory Board who were on their two-day visit to the state of Meghalaya met with a group of academicians, community leaders, student leaders and other eminent citizens representing various walks of life from the region to discuss on ways and means to extend bi-lateral ties with our neighboring country Bangladesh.

Informing reporters here on Tuesday after the meeting, NSAB chairman Naresh Chandra informed that during the discussion various issues were being raised in which they also discussed on how to improve the ties with Bangladesh. Chandra said  “In today’s discussion there was a strong support for improving relationship with Bangladesh by means of enhancing trade and transit facilities to the maximum,” NSAB chairman Naresh Chandra informed.

He also informed that the Board is looking forward to find all possibilities of inland waterways transport system with Bangladesh for which cooperation with Bangladesh is sought while citing the enormous opportunity and benefits that will be derived by the two countries.

While, talking about the views melted out at the discussion on the Armed Force Special Power act, Chandra said that the views varied as civil societies felt that it could be either amended or repeal.

“We are here to get the feel of the people of the North east on various issues which will be recommended to the central government who will look into it, said Chandra.

Besides, seeing the need to address issue regarding women Shandra said Empowerment of women and the hurdles associated to it was also discussed at the meet.

It may be mentioned here that the advisory board earlier met with officials from various north eastern states as part of the brainstorming exercise to get inputs about key issues relating to development, peace, security and people’s aspirations.

Meanwhile, the advisory board also discussed and took note of the deficiency in the north east in terms of better connectivity, security, infrastructure development besides others, the recommendations of which will be submitted to the central government.(SP News)
