Shillong, July 28: The people of the state of Meghalaya belief that Tara Ghar which is located in city’s prime area of the Shillong city is the Chief Minister Bungalow which is left an occupied at present, these Bungalow where the first chief minister of Meghalaya Late Captian W A Sangma stay for some time.
Tara Ghar is an Assam type building located in a centrally place, opposite words Lake in the East, Pine Wood Hotel in the North and the Raj Bhavan is closed to it. But the question why many politician when become chief ministers consider as unfortunate to occupied Tara Ghar.
When Meghalaya attain statehood in 21th January 1972, the first chief minister of Meghalaya late Captain W A Sangma turn this Bungalow into the chief minister residence but when unpleasant thing happen to his family he shifted to others.
When Late Darwin Diengdoh Pugh become chief minister he did not occupied the Bungalow, Then Come Late BB Lyngdoh as the Chief Minister he also did not occupied this Bungalow.
When Purno A Sangma become the Chief minister he occupied Tara Ghar but his government was dethrone after 779 days. When DD Lapang become the Chief minister he refuse to stay in this Bungalow but turn into an office but he was defeated in the General election in 1993.
After the General Election 1993 when SC Marak become the Chief Minister he occupied Tara Ghar and completed his full term as the Chief Minister to 1998. After the general election in February he become the chief minister for only 13 days and lost the election in the 2003.
Again when late B B LYngdoh become the Chief Minister in 1998 he did not occupied this Bungalow but in 2000 he step down as the chief minister and paved way for late E K Mawlong to become the Chief minister in 2000. When Late E K Mawlong took over as the Chief minister he move to Tara Ghar but he was dethrone in 2001.
When late EK Mawlong government collapse, late Dr FA Khonglam toke over as the Chief minister as an Independent in 2001 but he did not occupied the Bungalow but he use it as an office. Late Dr Khonglam in 2003 general election contested from the HSPDP Ticket.
After the General election in 2003, DD Lapang become the chief minister but again he refuse to occupied this bungalow, when his government collapse Bah J D Rymbai took over as the Chief Minister he move to this Tara Ghar but he was dethrone and denied Congress ticket in 2008 general election which made him to contest from the UDP Tiket and retain the Jirang seat.
In 2008 after the General Election Dr Donkupar Roy become the chief Minister but he dit not occupied the bungalow, and the president rule was impose. In 2009 when the president rule was lifted DD Lapang become the Chief minister but again he did not shift to the bungalow.
When the transition of power with in the Congress, when Dr Mukul Sangma took over from DD Lapang in 2010 he did not occupied the Bungalow and even in 2013 when he took over as the chief minister for the second term. But surprisingly Tara Ghar is not a designated bungalow for chief minister of Meghalaya, till date, Meghalaya dose not have a designated Bungalow for the Chief Minister. (SP News)
