Shillong, April 24: The Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) expressed it serious concern and strongly condemn the incident of alleged practising of witchcraft at Mawryngkang Village in East Khasi Hills. MPHRC urged the State Government to recognize witchcraft practicing as an issue of grave public concern.
“The state of Meghalaya has witnessed many such cases which had often led to the loss of lives and property amounting to gross violation of the rights of an individual” said MPHRC.
“Witchcraft practising in itself should be recognized as a problem that is deeply rooted in the peoples’ customary beliefs. More often than not, greed and jealousy are the main factors behind such atrocities committed to people alleged of witchcraft” added MPHRC.
“It is unfortunate that in India we do not have specific legislation to control and do away with this menace. Merely arresting and booking people under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) do not help in addressing the issue at its root cause’ said MPHRC.
“It is high time that the state of Meghalaya should come up with specific state legislations by introducing a bill in the legislature and enacting a law in curbing this menace once and for all to prevent of such incidences happening in the future” concluded MPHRC.(SP News)
