Shillong, September 3, 2013: Meghalaya Minister for Legal Metrology Shri. Sniawbhalang Dhar today inaugurated the first Working Standard Laboratory and Conference Hall of the Directorate of Legal Metrology at Office Complex, Shillong. The programme was organized by the Controller of Legal Metrology Shri. I. W. Ingty.
Speaking at the inaugural function S Dhar said that while purchasing goodsaccuracy is of utmost importance since the consumer will be at a lost if these goods are not accurate, He further reiterated that the department of Legal Metrology ensures appropriate level of credibility of measurement and thus looks after the welfare of the people by ensuring consumers protection and fair trade and services.
Shri. Robinus Syngkon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya highlighted the protection of the rights of every consumer of the state. He also stated that the department provides wide scope for consumer protection. Meghalaya Chief Secretary, Shri. W. M. S. Pariat said that the department of LegalMetrology is responsible for effective implementation of the Legal Metrology Acts and Rules of
the Government of India and enforcement of the provisions of the Act, Shri, B. N. Dixit, Director of Legal Metrology, Government of India, in his speech informed the gathering that the department is being computerised and the government of India isready to assist funds for its modernisation and other necessary infrastructure.
The inaugural programme was foIlowed with a workshop in which sessions on Legal Metrology Acts and Rules, Consumer Protection actand rules , Health and Food Safety and Packaged Commodity Rules are being deliberated. During the computers were also distributed to all the Inspectorate of the districts under the computerisation scheme.
The programme was attended by traditional heads, departmental officers, members oftrading community and resource persons from various government departments. (SP News)
