Shillong, March 21: A Workshop under “Faculty Training and Motivation and Adoption of Schools and Colleges by CSIR Labs” was inaugurated by Mr. P. P. Srivastava, Member of NEC at. St. Edmund’s College,that put students to the ultimate (God), they have to be respected because they show us theway to knowledge and true knowledge is the knowledge of the Supreme Being. He states that theteachers shape the future of the society and the real strength of the nation is the teacher.
He also said that today is the age of science hence, it is the age of energy and the role ofscience teachers in creating this energy cannot be ignored. He says, “teaching of science muststart from the primary level and it should be taught in the proper way, hence, there is needthat the correct method of teaching science to young students is evolved”. He also states thatthe drop in students taking up science is not a good scenario for the country.
He called uponthe science teachers to make teaching of science fascinating and guide students who opt forscience to a right direction. Dr. R. C. Boruah, Director, CSIR, North East Institute ofScience & Technology (NEIST), Jorhat while presenting the welcome address mentioned on theactive role played by CSIR and NEIST in fostering basic science in the society by developingproducts which are useful to the society and the community. The programmes and initiatives ofCSIR and NEIST have also raised the income of the BPL families. He called upon the Principalsof Colleges in Shillong and the teachers to use the facilities that CSIR and NEIST are havingin order to make science meaningful to the society at large. Dr. L. Nath, the co-ordinator of the workshop gave a data on the drop rate of students opting for basic science from 36% in1950 to only 15% in 2000. He said such a decline on students opting for basic science is nothealthy for the country and he called upon the teachers to encourage students to opt for basicscience because the country needs scientists and academicians to transform society.
The inaugural function was attended by the Principals of the Colleges in and around Shillong, theteachers of Botany and Zoology who will participate in the workshop and other dignitaries. (SP News)
