World Environment Day Observed at different part of the State

Shillong, June 5:  Along with the rest of the world, World Environment Day was observed today jointly by the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Division, East Khasi Hills District and the Meghalaya Bharat Scout & Guides by organizing a simple function held at the Bharat Scout and Guides Training Centre, Umtyngar, about 22kms from Shillong. The theme for the World Environment Day is “Think.Eat.Save”.

Mr. R. V. Lyngdoh, MLA, Government Chief Whip graced the occasion as the Chief Guest in the presence of Mr. C. Budnah, Additional, PCCF (Wildlife), Mr. C.P. Marak, CCF, Social Forestry and Environment, Smti A. Swer, State Secretary, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Mr. P. Kharkongor, Sordar, Laitkroh, students and scouts and guides and people from all walk of life.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lyngdoh lauded the organizers or holding this programme to express concern for the degradation of the environment. Stressing the importance of the protection of environment by all stakeholders, Mr. Lyngdoh emphasize that the very survival of mankind depend on clean environment.

Mr. Lyngdoh called upon the students in particular and younger generation in general to take responsibility in creating awareness about the urgent need for the protection and preservation of clean and hygienic surroundings.

Others highlight of the day include power point presentation on the subject “Status of Environment of Meghalaya” by Mr. C.P. Marak,  song and skit presented by the students and  distribution of prizes and certificates to the winners and participants of slogan, drawing and painting competitions on the theme. Planting of tree saplings in an around the training centre by the chief guest, other dignitaries and students was also carried out later in the day.

Border Security Force Meghalaya Frontier also  organized World Environmental day today. Many events were organized to mark the occasion at Frontier HQ BSF Umpling Shillong and at various other BSF locations in Meghalaya. The Focus of the occasion was to lay emphasis on the specific theme decided for the World Environment Day 2013. “Think.Eat.Save“. The theme stresses upon the anti-food waste campaign and how to reduce the food wastes all over the world.

The stress was also laid on to promote the benefit of healthy environment and improve the rapid degradation of the environment around us. The BSF took up tree plantation in their areas. (SP News)
