Shillong November 30: In its endeavor to ensure that there is a law to protect women from prevailing discrimination and violence against them, the North Eastern Network (NEN) released a Resource Directory (RD) for Women as well as a guidebook translated in Khasi entitled ‘101 Things You Always Wanted To know About the Police But Were Too Afraid to Ask’ originally published by Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) with an attempt to disseminate and share knowledge.
The Resource Directory for Women and ‘101 Things You Always Wanted To know About the Police But Were Too Afraid to Ask’ was released by the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills District, M. Kharkrang at Shillong Press Club.
Addressing the press conference Kharkrang lauded the initiative of the NEN who is playing an active role to ensure safety of women in Meghalaya. He said that the RD as well as the guidebook will provide information about where women can seek help in different kinds of emergencies. Kharkrang said, “This is the first time that NEN has taken such initiative for the safety of women in Meghalaya” adding “Meghalaya as well as the neighbouring states of the country are facing such crisis from time to time”.
Kharkrang also said that “The RD as well as the guidebook will provide information about where women can seek help in different kinds of emergencies”, he added.
It may be noted that NEN has addressed the issue of discrimination and Violence Against Women (VAW) for many years now and for several years of working with the Department of Health as with the Meghalaya Police, NEN has brought some positive changes like setting up of support centre for Women (Iohlynti) at Civil Hospital, Shillong.(SP News)
