World disabled celebrated observed at Tura

TURA, December 3: World Disabled Day was today celebrated at Tura with an elaborate function organized at the Deputy Commissioner park by the Social Welfare department in collaboration with the Bethany Society, SSA and the District Sports Officer.

Retired Colonel and Bethany Society Administrator T Donald graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while best Teacher awardee (2001) Neveula M Sangma aRetd_Colonel___Administrator_Bethany_Society_T_Donald_distributing_prizes_during_the_world_disabled_day_celebration_at_DC_park__Tura_on_3_Dec_2012_._ttended the function as the Guest of Honor.

Addressing the gathering T Donald that the day called not only for celebration but to take stock of the situation. Emphasizing on the need to better understand the difficulties faced by differently abled Donald said that the rights of the differently abled should be made known to all so as to ensure they are protected.

Speaking briefly on the endeavors of the Bethany Society in providing for a better life for differently abled people Donald informed that 808 people have been issued disability certificates and are currently eligible for the Chief Minister Social Assistance Scheme wherein monetary allowances are issued for widows, infirm and the differently abled. Stating that parents who opt for non-institutional deliveries should not take for granted any minor deficiencies during birth Donald urged them to make use of the nearest PHCs, CHCs or ask assistance from ASHAs.

We should not look back and make sure the differently abled find their rightful place in society stated Donald and  urged everyone to take a pledge to make the world a better place for the differently abled.

Expressing her happiness for the day being celebrated worldwide as world disabled day Neveula Sangma stated that even though she was confined to a wheel chair disability did not deter her from pursuing her passion for teaching. Stating that parents of differently abled children not to lock up their wards Sangma urged them to understand their wards⠤ifficulties and help them live a dignified life. The government has launched numerous schemes to benefit the differently informed Sangma and urged parents to avail these schemes. Differently abled people do not need pity or sympathy but understanding and assistance stated Sangma.

Later in the day prizes were distributed to winners of various competitions held for the differently abled. Monetary awards and certificates were also given out to the best inclusive schools of the district

Among others who spoke at the occasion were Bethany Society President Sharleen Sawkhmie, Badthe Kadam District Coordinator, Silme D Sangma, Monfort Centre for Education Director Br Soosai  and Darlingstone Ch Sangma.(SP News)
