Shillong, Jan 21: On the occasion of Meghalaya’s Statehood Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, extended his greetings to Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma and the people of the State, reaffirming the Centre’s continued commitment to the development of Meghalaya and the Northeast.
In his message, the Prime Minister lauded Meghalaya’s exceptional natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and the unique traditions of the Khasi, Garo and Jaintia communities. He highlighted the State’s deep respect for nature, spirit of harmony, and commitment to women empowerment, noting that these values continue to enrich India’s cultural mosaic.
Recalling his visits to the State, including his visit to Shillong in 2016 for the Northeastern Council Plenary Meeting, the Prime Minister expressed admiration for the warmth and hospitality of the people of Meghalaya. He reiterated that the Northeast is India’s Ashtalakshmi and emphasised that India’s progress is intrinsically linked to the development of the region.
He also appreciated Meghalaya’s role during India’s G20 Presidency, particularly the successful hosting of international events such as the Think20 conference and a conference on the space sector, which showcased the State to the global community and boosted domestic tourism.
Commending the State’s post-COVID economic performance, the Prime Minister noted Meghalaya’s exemplary growth rate, prudent fiscal management, and sustained efforts in sectors such as housing, agriculture, healthcare, and education.
He further acknowledged the positive impact of various Central Government schemes in improving infrastructure and livelihoods across the State. Highlighting Meghalaya’s strong sporting and cultural ecosystem, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the Centre’s support for sports infrastructure and talent development, especially as the State prepares to host the upcoming National Games. He also appreciated Meghalaya’s global influence in music and art and assured continued support to nurture such talent.
The Prime Minister also remembered Late Shri P. A. Sangma Ji on his 10th death anniversary, stating that his understanding of the Northeast, and Meghalaya in particular, was immense and that his vision continues to inspire the State’s development
Responding to the Prime Minister’s message, Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma expressed his gratitude, saying, “On behalf of the people of Meghalaya, I thank the Prime Minister for his warm wishes, continued guidance, and the steadfast support of the Government of India and Central Ministries in accelerating the State’s growth and development.” He also conveyed appreciation for the Prime Minister’s remembrance and tribute to the late Shri P. A. Sangma Ji, whose ideals continue to guide Meghalaya’s progress.
