Meghalaya Assembly adjourns budget session business following demise of MP

Shillong, Feb 20: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Shri Thomas A. Sangma on Friday informed that an emergent meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) with the consent of the government has resolved to suspend the list of business slated for 20th February, 2026 in respect of Shillong Member of Parliament, Dr. Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, following his sudden demise.

The Speaker stated that the House will assemble to make an obituary reference in honour of the departed Member of Parliament, after which the proceedings will be adjourned for the day. He further noted that as Friday was designated as a Government Business Day, the consent of the Government was duly sought for suspending the listed business.

Shri Sangma also informed that the presentation of the Budget and the reply to the Motion of Thanks on the Governor’s Address will be rescheduled upon revision of the session calendar.

The BAC meeting, chaired by the Speaker, was attended by Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Prestone Tynsong (In-charge of Parliamentary Affairs), Leader of the Opposition Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, MLAs Shri Charles Pyngrope and Shri Paul Lyngdoh, and Assembly Secretary Shri Malthus S. Sangma.
