Shillong, March 25: Reinforcing the importance of cleanliness and balanced nutrition among young students, the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, organised an awareness programme on Swachhata and Nutrition at Clear Springs School today, aligning with the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission and POSHAN Abhiyaan.
The programme featured quiz and drawing competitions designed to promote key messages in an interactive and creative manner. Students participated with great enthusiasm, showcasing their understanding and awareness through their responses and artwork. Prizes were awarded to the winners to encourage continued interest and participation.
Addressing the students, using photographs and visual examples, Smti. Palvy Dora Lyngdoh, IEC specialist, Urban Affairs Department, conducted an engaging presentation on sanitation and responsible waste management.
She provided an overview of the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, with particular focus on the safe handling and scientific disposal of sanitary and other special category waste, highlighting the need for a lifecycle approach to waste management.
Emphasising practices such as segregation at source, zero littering, and “My Waste, My Responsibility,” she encouraged students to adopt environmentally responsible habits in their daily lives.
She further observed that educational institutions can play a pivotal role by adopting systematic cleanliness practices, ensuring proper waste segregation, and promoting student-led initiatives, thereby setting an example for the wider community.
Smti. Odalin Sumer, Medical Health Officer, East Khasi Hills, delivered a session on balanced diet and healthy eating habits. She stressed the inclusion of locally available nutritious food in daily meals and highlighted the importance of the Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) programme in preventing anaemia among adolescents and improving overall health and concentration.
The programme was held in the presence of the Principal of the school, Smt. Majella Badwar, who appreciated the initiative and expressed satisfaction that the students gained valuable knowledge on both hygiene and nutrition, which are essential for their overall development.
The programme witnessed active participation from faculty members and students, creating an engaging platform for spreading awareness on hygiene and healthy living.
