Mawkyrwat, December 18: With a view to improve the public ammonites and public premises, the South West Khasi Hills District Administration in collaboration with the Citizen’s Forum of Mawkyrwat and the Sankur organized a cleaning drive of the Mawkyrwat Market under the banner of “Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign” on Tuesday where Officers, NGOs, Students, shopkeepers and public took part.
The Cleaning Drive was flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District Mr A.Mawlong IAS in presence of the Superintendent of Police, Mawkyrwat Mr S.Nongtynger MPS, the Additional Deputy Commissioners Mr K.L.Nongbri MCS and Mr M.S.Sangma MCS and other. The aim and objective of the Cleaning Drive is to make people aware of hygienic and cleanliness and to be self-responsible in keeping the environment and its surrounding clean.
The Cleaning Drive was started at 8 Am where the Deputy Commissioner took the lead. Earlier, instruments such as barsha, lime etc were distributed to the volunteers to do the needful. Cane baskets with hangers were also handed over to the shopkeepers to keep them (baskets) at designated places where waste from their shops can be threw in.
Later after the waste was taken away by the vehicles to designated place of about 4km from Mawkyrwat town, the fire service personnel sprayed the road and footpaths with water to wash away the dust which was followed by white washing the walls in and around market by the students and volunteers.
