Shillong, January 10: The farmers of Meghalaya residing in the southern slope bordering Bangladesh earn their lively hood from cultivating tespata leaves(Bay Leaves). The cultivation of these plants has spread in the Ri Bhoi District in the last few years with the migration of people from the war areas.

eaves from Meghalaya annually is not less than two lack metric tons, all these where sent to Kolkata since the Bengali people used these leaves as spices for cocking. These leaves are also use in red tea.
Earlier the Bangladesh use to import this leaves from Meghalaya, but since the Government of Meghalaya recognized as forest produce the export of tespata leaves has stop. In spite of the demand from the farmers of the state the government has turn a deft years.
The former MLA from Mylliem constituency Mr Pynshai Manik Syiem has brought up the issued in the floor of the house but the government till date has not taken any step to recognized tespata cultivation as agricultural produce.(SP News)
