Shillong, November 02:Shri Sajeki Passah panaliar Jowai in his open letter to the chief secretarygovernment of Meghalaya, Shillong said that “ I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the state government and district administrations for being reduced to a toothless tiger in the past few months”.
The dumping of Industrial waste Fly-Ash by industriesalong the NH-44 It has really turned out into a shame now and it is evident and proven that all the Orders and Notifications of the state government are vague, ambiguous and toothless as the violators of such laws (orders/notifications passed) seems to get away unnoticed and the government as always turn its blind eye towards illegal acts and violations of such Orders and Notifications.
In his letter he said that he would like to remind the government, district administrations and various government departments had enforced a ban the illegal dumping of Industrial Waste – Fly Ash (a Hazardous Industrial Waste which is created by burning coal and waste in power plants and that it retains all the properties of coal and as such fly ash pollutes the ambient air, water bodies and thus it degrades not only the environment but also human health) along the stretches of the National Highways in Meghalaya early this year (during the months of March-April 2012).
Yes, for a couple of months since the Orders were passed by the state government as well as the district administration the violators and truckers had abided and followed them (the Orders and Notifications banning the illegal dumping of the industrial Waste-Fly Ash). But this act of obeying the Orders is nothing but eyewash and an attempt to deceive the Fragile, Puny and Fazed government under some pretexts for a short period of time.
“The main impact from the dumping of Fly Ash bags is on the ambient air. When the bags are crushed by vehicles (Fig. 5, Fig. 7, Fig 14), the fly ash becomes airborne. When airborne fly ash is inhaled it can cause respiratory tract infections. Trace elements in fly ash are carcinogenic and harmful to human health” were the remarks on a report Dated 30th November 2011 prepared by the Meghalaya state pollution control board.
Now for the past two-three months the dumping of the Industrial Waste – Fly Ash has resumed and the government has once again failed to act on such violations indicating that the Orders and Notification were feeble and toothless. This shows that the government is turning a Blind Eye towards such threats.
Despite the dangers posed by the illegal dumping the continuation in the illegal dumping proved nothing but the nebulous condition of the state government. Hopefully this time the state government and the district administration will take the matter seriously in the name of Justice, Public Life and Pollution Free Environment, stated Shri Sajeki Passah.(SP News)
