Shillong, Oct 31: Commemorating the 144th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) and Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas was observed in East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat today at the Conference Room of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The programme was attended by Shri. S.S. Syiemlieh, MCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Shri. S. Marwein, EAC, East Jaintia Hills District, and the Districts Officers of the various departments.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills in his speech said that national unity day is observed to promote national integration among citizens as well as to maintain the unity and integrity of our country.
“The observance is not only to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who was the architect of national integration of independent India, but also to reaffirm the inherent strength and resilience of the nation to withstand the actual threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country”, he added.
The ADC also administered the national unity pledge to all the government officers and government employees of the various offices of the district.
To mark the occasion, a Run for Unity was also organized earlier in the day by the office of the District Sports Officer, East Jaintia Hills. The event was flagged off by the Addl. Deputy Commissioner, Shri. S.S Syiemlieh, where a huge number of children and youth of the district took part in the 10 km unity run which started from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office to Rymbai Cemetery and back to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
The unity run concluded with a prize distribution ceremony where Shri. S. Marwein, EAC, East Jaintia Hills District distributed cash prize to all the winners.
At Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and District Sports Officer, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat in collaboration with the District Sports Promotion Society, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat, organised the ‘Run for Unity’ (Open 6.4 Kms) at Mawkyrwat as part of the celebration of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day. The run was flagged off by Shri MC Syiem, Superintendent of Police, South West Khasi Hills District.
