DoT develops CEIR portal to enhance telecom security for consumers in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jan 06: It is brought to the notice of citizens that The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India has developed and operationalized the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. The CEIR portal enables citizens to report lost or stolen mobile handsets, assist in their tracking and recovery, and helps prevent the misuse of such devices, thereby enhancing public safety and security.

Since the implementation of the CEIR facility in the State of Meghalaya, a substantial number of users have registered complaints through the portal to block, trace, and recover their mobile phones. As on 06.01.26, a total of 5914 mobile handsetshas been reported lost or stolen on the CEIR portal in Meghalaya. Out of these, so far, 1662 mobile handsets have been successfully traced and recovered, reflecting the growing effectiveness of the system and enhanced coordination among stakeholders.

The CEIR portal allows citizens to:

  • Block lost or stolen mobile phones, preventing misuse
  • Track and recover devices once they reappear on any telecom networks
  • Unblock recovered devices seamlessly through the same platform

The success of CEIR in Meghalaya is very encouraging through the active cooperation of Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), State Police authorities, and growing public awareness about digital services offered by the Department of Telecommunications.

The CEIR system not only safeguards consumer interests but also plays a crucial role in curbing mobile-related cybercrime, discouraging illegal handset trade, and enhancing national digital security.

Citizens are requested to promptly report loss or theft of their mobile handset through the CEIR portal at https://www.ceir.gov.in.

The Department of Telecommunications remains committed to expanding digital public services and ensuring a safe and secure telecom ecosystem for all citizens.
