Shillong, Jan 19: Aiming at promoting the rich cultural heritage and aesthetics of the region, the first ever mega event in West Khasi Hills displaying culture, customs and traditions called the “IONG-LAJONG” festival was organised by the South West Khasi Hills District Arts and Culture Society with the support of the Directorate of Arts and Culture at Maharam Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat on Friday.
Inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills District, A.Mawlong, the the gala event attracted scores of people from all walks of life to the venue.
The event showcased unique and colourful Dance of a hundred warriors presented by the Seng Khasi from Nonglang village besides the traditional songs,folk dance of the Khasis, Garos and the Hajongs along with comedies and skits performed by the Kynhun Biria u Maram, Salansar and Iong Lajong were added more colour to the rich traditional culture of the society.
Other events of the evening that enthralled the crowd includes showcasing and displaying of ethnic apparels with the indigenous and Fashion sequences designed by Arif Mukhim and the Colours of the North East designed by Yana Ngoba.
Besides there was a skit performance by Sanriti Nongsiej, performances by the top five finalist of Meghalaya Dancing Star, Performances by top local bands Wild Tears, Cadenza and Scatter and a memorable rendition of modern Khasi songs by Rana Kharkongor and Waroh Pde.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills District, A.Mawlong IAS flagged off a half marathon with the election slogans “Run for Democracy” and “come and vote” which was conducted by the Office of the District Sports Officer, Nongstoin
