Shillong, Feb 23: The issue of amendment of the Scheduled Tribes Order, 1950 has been raised by HYC for the last many years with the Government of Meghalaya and the Government of India.
Hence, HYC expresses deep concern and disappointment over the statement of the Chief Minister of Meghalaya that the Government is still awaiting the report of the Committee constituted to examine the amendment of the Scheduled Tribes Order, 1950 even after the lapse of 14 months since it was formed.
The continued delay in submission of the Committee’s report reflects a lack of seriousness and urgency on the part of the State Government in safeguarding the rights and interests of the indigenous tribal population of the State.
The HYC further questions the purpose of constituting such a committee if its report is being indefinitely delayed. The indigenous people of Meghalaya deserve clarity, transparency, and accountability. Prolonged silence and bureaucratic procrastination only fuel suspicion that vested interests are at play.
HYC therefore demands that the Committee must submit its report within a fixed and publicly announced timeline and the contents of the report must be made public and subjected to wide public consultation before any decisions are taken on the said Report by the State Government.
