Manipal Hospital, strengthens access to advanced Cardiac treatment for N.E

Shillong, Feb 10: Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur and Salt Lake clusters, part of the Manipal Hospitals Group, one of India’s largest healthcare networks, organised a two-day North East Media Summit, bringing together media representatives from Assam, Shillong, Arunachal Pradesh, Agartala, and Mizoram.

The summit highlighted how Manipal Hospital, Broadway has emerged as a trusted centre of excellence for patients from Mizoram and other North-Eastern states seeking advanced cardiothoracic and gastrointestinal care, delivering complex, life-saving treatments through cutting-edge technology, multidisciplinary clinical expertise, and compassionate, patient-centric care away from home.

Reaffirming its commitment to patients from the North-East, the hospital has successfully managed several challenging cases across specialties. Among them was a 17-year-old girl from Aizawl, Mizoram, who underwent a life-saving minimally invasive cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease, and numerous patients presenting with chronic and advanced gastrointestinal conditions requiring specialised medical intervention.

In one such cardiac case, Laldinpuii (name changed), a 17-year-old girl from Mizoram, had been struggling with breathlessness and fatigue for years, unable to participate fully in daily activities. After extensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team at Manipal Hospital, Broadway, she was diagnosed with a large Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)—a 4 cm hole in the heart requiring urgent surgical correction.

Considering her young age and strong cosmetic concerns, the cardiac surgical team opted for a Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) approach instead of conventional open-heart surgery. The procedure was successfully performed on 26th June by Dr. Sujoy Chatterjee, Senior Consultant – Cardiothoracic and  Vascular Surgery, Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, through a small 2.5-inch incision on the right side of the chest, leaving virtually no visible scar.

The advanced approach ensured minimal trauma, faster recovery, and excellent clinical outcomes, with the patient recovering smoothly and being discharged within 10 days, returning home with renewed health and confidence.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Sujoy Chatterjee, Senior Consultant – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, said, “The patient had a large congenital defect that required timely intervention. Given her age and cosmetic concerns, we chose the Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery approach, which allowed her to recover with minimal pain, blood loss, and scarring.

MICS enables faster healing and a quicker return to routine life, without compromising long-term outcomes when patient selection is done carefully. As a unit, Manipal Hospital, Broadway is proud to make such advanced cardiac care accessible to patients from Mizoram and other North-Eastern states.”

This successful intervention was facilitated under the tie-up between the Mizoram Government and Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, ensuring timely access to expert cardiac care for patients from remote regions.

Alongside advanced cardiac services, Manipal Hospital, Broadway has also emerged as a preferred referral centre for patients from the North-East suffering from gastrointestinal disorders. The region carries a disproportionately high burden of GI diseases, with studies indicating that over 70% of patients presenting with chronic upper-GI symptoms are diagnosed with gastritis, and Helicobacter pylori infection detected in nearly 30–35% of cases.

The North-East also reports some of the highest incidence rates of gastrointestinal cancers in India, particularly gastric and oesophageal cancers, as per national cancer registry data. As a result, patients from Mizoram and neighbouring states often travel long distances in search of accurate diagnosis, long-term disease management, and access to advanced endoscopy and hepatology services.

Manipal Hospital, Broadway addresses this critical need through comprehensive gastroenterology care, supported by advanced diagnostics, therapeutic endoscopy, and evidence-based medical management, ensuring timely intervention and continuity of care for patients from the region.

Commenting on the gastrointestinal disease burden, Dr. Sujit Chaudhuri, HOD – Medical Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital, Broadway, said, “The North-East has a distinct gastrointestinal disease profile, with a high prevalence of chronic gastritis, liver disease, and gastrointestinal cancers. Early diagnosis and timely medical intervention play a critical role in improving outcomes. At Manipal Hospital, Broadway, we focus on comprehensive evaluation, personalised treatment, and long-term follow-up, especially for patients travelling from distant regions like Mizoram.”

These outcomes underscore Manipal Hospital, Broadway’s strength in delivering integrated, tertiary-level care across cardiothoracic surgery and gastroenterology, supported by advanced infrastructure, experienced clinicians, and patient-centric protocols. For families travelling from the North-East, the hospital also ensures continuity of care, transparent communication, and coordinated follow-up.

With a growing number of successful outcomes for patients from Mizoram and across the North-East, continues to stand as a trusted healthcare destination ensuring that distance is never a barrier to world-class treatment, recovery, and hope.
