Meghalaya CM lays foundation stones for Upgradation of Mangsang PHC

Mangsang, March 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mr. Conrad K. Sangma today laid the foundation stones for the construction of a mini stadium at Mangsang and the renovation and improvement of the Mangsang Primary Health Centre (PHC) during a programme held at Mangsang in East Garo Hills district.

The mini stadium, to be constructed by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, will strengthen sports infrastructure in the area and provide young people with better opportunities to train and participate in sporting activities. The project involves the upgradation of the existing facility originally constructed by P. A. Sangma, for which an amount of ₹4.73 crore has been sanctioned.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister recalled his long association with the area and the special connection that P. A. Sangma had with Mangsang. “I have many fond memories of this field where we are sitting today. I have held many meetings here, and some of them were also attended by Late P. A. Sangma,” he said.

He noted that the late leader always spoke warmly about Mangsang and its people. “Late P. A. Sangma had a special affection for Mangsang and often spoke about this place and its people. It is therefore befitting that today, on his 10th death anniversary, we are laying the foundation stone for the upgradation of the stadium that he had originally constructed,” he added.

The Chief Minister also spoke about ongoing efforts to document and preserve the life and legacy of P. A. Sangma so that future generations can be inspired by his journey, mentioning the museum inaugurated recently as well as a book and film being prepared on his life.

On the same occasion, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the renovation and expansion of the Mangsang PHC. The project, for which ₹2.98 crore has been sanctioned, includes renovation of the main building, construction of staff quarters, an additional GNM quarter, and a yoga-cum-meeting hall.

The improvements aim to strengthen healthcare services and provide better facilities for both medical staff and residents of the surrounding villages.

Emphasizing the importance of health services at the grassroots level, the Chief Minister said that strengthening healthcare infrastructure remains a key priority for the government.

The Chief Minister also outlined several other developmental initiatives for the area. Responding to concerns raised by local leaders, he said that fire and emergency services for the region will be activated soon. On the demand for creation of a new block, he assured that the proposal will be examined.

He further informed that the Mangsang–Adokgre road will soon see progress as the second phase of construction is expected to begin shortly. The Mangsang–Riangdo road, which will serve as an important connecting route to Shillong and Guwahati, is currently under survey.

Urging young people to take advantage of government initiatives, the Chief Minister encouraged them to actively participate in various schemes aimed at creating opportunities and supporting entrepreneurship.

He also reminded citizens, especially the youth, about the importance of maintaining cleanliness in their communities. The programme was attended by Rongjeng MLA Jim M. Sangma, government officials, and members of the community.

The initiatives form part of the Government’s continued efforts to promote balanced development and improve essential infrastructure across the State.
