Tura, March 16: Dhormonath Ch. Sangma, MDC from Naguapara constituency, assumed charge as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on Monday with the support of 21 MDCs.
His elelction follows the resignation of former CEM Albinus R. Marak ahead of a scheduled No Confidence Motion in the council. The motion had been proposed by 21 MDCs who had earlier met Meghalaya Governor G. H. Vijayashankar in Shillong seeking permission to move the motion.
The developments come amid the postponement of the GHADC elections, which were earlier scheduled for April 10, due to the prevailing law-and-order situation in parts of Garo Hills.
With the new CEM now in place, focus is expected to shift towards restoring stability in the region and addressing issues that led to recent tensions.
