Shillong, May 31: Observing “World No Tobacco Day”, the Department of Surgical Oncology and College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS, with the support of the Northeast India Association of Surgical Oncology (NASO), organized a health camp and cancer awareness program at the Diengpasoh Health and Wellness Centre on 30th May 2025.
Dr. Caleb Harris, Head, Department of Surgical Oncology, accompanied by doctors and nursing students from NEIGRIHMS offered free consultations for common ailments at the camp.
The team also offered consultation for cancer screenings which is crucial for persons at high risk of oral, breast, and cervical cancers. A short skit was also performed to raise awareness on cancer prevention, focusing specifically on ill effects of tobaccoand the benefits of quitting tobacco.
Prof. (Dr.) Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS, praised the effort of the NEIGRIHMS team as the majority of the cancers in Meghalaya were tobacco related.
He further added that since it was a matter of serious concern, with considerable Tobacco use in the community, especially teenagers, NEIGRIHMS iscommitted to improving community health andraising cancer awareness in all nearby villages.
