Tura, May 26: National People’s party chief, Purno Agitok Sangma has
hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet.
“It is the prerogative of the Prime Minister and we are sure he has
taken all his decisions keeping in mind the interest of the people and
the country. As for us, we have been given a responsibility by the
people, which we will try and fulfil to the best of our ability in
whatever capacity”, said Sangma over phone from New Delhi.
Sangma, a veteran Parliamentarian, who has held many key portfolios
over the years, including the post of the speaker of the Lok Sabha,
said: “I will extend all expertise and support for the new government
led by the visionary leadership of Modi”.
Sangma’s party NPP, which had forged a pre-poll alliance with BJP
managed to win just one seat. His party is also part of the Neiphiu
Rio led North East Regional Political Forum (NERPF), which was formed
last year.
It was expected that both Sangma and Rio will be accommodated in
Modi’s cabinet.
“As member of the NDA, I should be available for whatever role I am
assigned”, said Sangma.
After a gap of six and half years, Sangma has returned to parliament
as an MP and an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
He had called on Prime Minister on two occasions to extend his good
wishes, which he described as courtesy call. Sangma has assured Modi
to extend all cooperation and supports on subjects related to North
East.
Sangma, who is yet to completely recover from his ligament fracture,
could not attend the historic swearing-in ceremony of Modi and the
cabinet.
NPP leader Conrad Sangma said, “He is not being able to attend as the
distance required to walk is too far plus many steps to climb. Car
entry restricted because of security reason”.(SP News)
